About the role

As Staff Engineer for Cloud, you set technical direction across multiple domains and teams, not just one. Where a Lead owns a single domain end to end, you operate at the level above it: spotting where domains need to work together, resolving disputes that a single team can't settle alone, and lending your judgement to the hardest technical problems wherever they surface.

This is a hands-on, individual-contributor role. You have no direct reports; your influence comes from technical credibility, sound judgement, and a track record of being right about hard things. You work closely with Leads, Engineering Managers, Product, and our Principal Engineer to keep architecture, sequencing, and trade-offs coherent across Cloud as it grows.

Your responsibilities

• Set technical direction across multiple Cloud domains and teams, identifying where local decisions need to fit into a coherent whole.

• Lead high-impact, cross-team technical initiatives end to end, staying close enough to the code and production systems to make grounded calls.

• Partner with Leads, the Principal Engineer, Product, and Engineering Managers to align architecture, surface trade-offs, and keep dependencies visible.

• Set and uphold engineering standards for correctness, testing, security, observability, performance, and data integrity across the teams you touch.

• Resolve technical disagreements that cross domain boundaries, make the call, and document the reasoning so others can follow it.

• Review designs and code, and mentor senior engineers directly through real work, multiplying your impact through others.

• Turn recurring incidents and cross-domain friction into durable systemic fixes rather than one-off patches.

Your key competencies

We're not counting years of experience. We're looking for evidence that you've led technical work beyond the boundary of a single team, and that you can build and operate production systems in our core languages.

• Proficiency in both Go and JavaScript (or equivalent experience), with hands-on experience building and operating production systems in each.

• Experience setting technical direction across multiple systems or teams, not just owning one domain.

• Strong software-engineering fundamentals: sound judgement on architecture, APIs, data, reliability, security, and operability.

• A track record of building or substantially reshaping systems, not only maintaining or migrating existing ones.

• The ability to resolve technical disagreements across team boundaries and clearly explain the reasoning and trade-offs behind a decision.

• Comfort working directly in the code: debugging, reviewing, and operating production systems yourself.

• Proven ability to mentor engineers and Leads, raising technical quality without becoming the only person allowed to decide.

• Clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Comfort operating with ambiguity, incomplete systems, and a high degree of autonomy.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud platforms, distributed systems, public APIs, billing or payments, identity and access management, or developer-facing products.

• Experience with event-driven systems, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, or production workflow systems.

• Prior experience in a Staff Engineer or equivalent org-wide technical role.

• Experience helping a domain or platform scale from an early implementation into a dependable product.
