Database Administrator
Imagine a future where everyone has instant, low-cost access to powerful computing resources. We're building a fully featured European cloud computing platform-with everything one needs to run, scale, and deploy applications and workloads. In addition, our infrastructure runs on 100% renewable energy.
We're ambitious, curious, and gutsy doers. We practice a low hierarchy across the company and high morale in our teams. We've already achieved a lot, yet we're only getting started. Now it's your chance to join the ride. We offer more than just the job - we offer a career-defining opportunity to be part of building something big!
Join Verda while it's still being built - not once it's finished.
Behind every product we ship sits a database that has to be correct, durable, and fast. As our Database Administrator, you'll own the stateful layer of our platform end-to-end: the Postgres and ClickHouse clusters that hold our operational and analytical data, and the supporting key-value and document stores that surround them. You'll be the person engineering teams trust when they need a new cluster designed, an outage diagnosed, or a migration run without losing a byte.
Why Verda
Cash + equity compensation along with various fringe benefits (e.g., healthcare, lunch, wellbeing, etc.).
Profitable operations with rapid, sustained growth.
31 nationalities, with 6 different ones on the management team.
An opportunity to make a clear impact and work alongside world-class engineers, researchers, and partners across the global AI ecosystem.
Practicalities
Location: Helsinki
Hybrid mode: This role requires presence in our Helsinki office 3 days per week. Don't worry - you won't be alone or hangry there. (We keep a stocked fridge)
Employment type: Full-time and permanent
Your responsibilities
Own the lifecycle of our stateful data storages - design, deploy, operate, upgrade, and decommission Postgres and ClickHouse clusters in production
Run replication, high-availability, and failover for Postgres and ClickHouse (replicated tables, keeper, sharding)
Design and continuously verify backup and point-in-time recovery procedures across all managed engines, and rehearse restores on a regular cadence
Maintain monitoring, alerting, and capacity planning for database workloads, and drive query- and schema-level performance work with the application teams
Participate in on-call rotations, lead incident response for data-tier outages, and run blameless post-mortems
Plan and execute schema changes, version upgrades, and data migrations with zero or minimal downtime
Operate the surrounding key-value and NoSQL stores (Redis-style caches, Mongo, etc.) the platform depends on
Develop automation for provisioning, configuration, and routine operations using Ansible, GitOps, and CI/CD workflows
Contribute to data-tier standards, runbooks, and operational best practices
Your key competencies
5+ years administering production relational databases, with deep hands-on Postgres expertise
Strong experience with Postgres replication, high availability, failover, backup and point-in-time recovery
Proven experience operating ClickHouse in production: replication, sharding, backup-restore, and monitoring
Track record of database performance tuning - query plans, indexing, schema design, vacuum/merge behavior, resource sizing
Experience with on-call rotations and production incident management on the data tier
Strong Linux administration and debugging skills
Experience with infrastructure automation (Ansible), GitOps, and CI/CD as applied to stateful systems
Comfortable designing and executing zero/low-downtime schema changes and major-version upgrades
Working knowledge of database observability - metrics, slow-query analysis, and capacity planning (Prometheus, Grafana, or similar)
Scripting or programming experience (Python, Bash, Go, or similar)
Strong collaboration and communication skills
Nice to have
Experience operating key-value storages (Redis, Valkey, etcd, or similar) in production
Experience operating NoSQL document databases such as MongoDB
Familiarity with running stateful workloads on Kubernetes (operators, persistent volumes, storage classes)
Familiarity with connection poolers (PgBouncer, Pgpool) and proxy layers
Experience with logical replication and cross-cluster data movement (Debezium, CDC pipelines)
Knowledge of distributed systems, storage, and high-availability environments
Exposure to data security and compliance practices (encryption at rest/in transit, access controls, audit logging)
Comfortable using AI-powered tooling to improve engineering workflows.
What's next
We're building fast and this role needs the right person behind it. There's no artificial deadline, but when we find who we're looking for, we move. If this sounds like your next move, apply now.
Please submit your application through our Careers page. We don't accept applications sent by email.
