Software Engineer, Sandbox environments
Imagine a future where AI systems can safely execute code, interact with tools, and operate complex environments - without compromising security or performance.
At Verda, we’re building a fully featured European cloud computing platform, and a key part of that is enabling secure, high-performance execution environments for AI workloads. Our Sandbox Service sits at the intersection of virtualization, containers, and large-scale orchestration - powering how models interact with the world.
We’re ambitious, curious, and pragmatic builders. We operate with low hierarchy, high ownership, and a strong bias for action. We’ve already achieved a lot, but we’re just getting started.
Now it’s your chance to join the ride. Join Verda while it’s still being built - not once it’s finished!
Your responsibilities
In this role, you will help deploy, operate, and improve Verda’s Sandbox Service - our platform for secure execution environments across clusters. You will work closely with platform engineers, focusing on production operations, automation, troubleshooting, and incremental improvements.
You will help to deploy and maintain sandbox environments based on containers, Firecracker microVMs, and QEMU/KVM virtual machines, ensuring reliability and performance across the stack. You will support to write and maintain automation for provisioning and lifecycle management, and actively operate the platform in production, monitoring health, responding to incidents, and driving root cause analysis.
You will diagnose and resolve issues across multiple layers, including the host OS, hypervisor, container runtime, and guest environments. You will also contribute to integrating the Sandbox Service with provisioning, scheduling, and observability systems across Verda’s platform.
Additionally, you will help monitor performance characteristics such as startup times, density, I/O behavior, and networking, while building tools and dashboards for observability, auditing, and capacity planning. You will stay close to upstream developments (e.g., kernel changes, Firecracker releases) and support rollouts, migrations, and on-call operations.
Your key competencies
Strong Linux fundamentals (Ubuntu/Debian), including system configuration and troubleshooting
Solid understanding of virtualization concepts (KVM, QEMU, hypervisors)
Experience with containers (Docker/Podman) and understanding of namespaces, cgroups, and filesystems
Experience with Bash scripting and Python for automation and tooling
Familiarity with Linux kernel modules and debugging via sysfs, procfs, and dmesg
Basic networking knowledge (bridging, NAT, routing, debugging with tools like ip, ss, tcpdump)
Comfortable working across system layers (OS, hypervisor, container runtime, guest environments)
Experience using AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex) for automation and operational tasks
Proficiency with Git
Nice to have
Hands-on experience with KVM, QEMU, libvirt, Firecracker, or MicroVM.nix
Experience with Linux kernel modules relevant to sandboxing (vfio, virtio, vhost)
Additional sandbox substrates: Cloud Hypervisor, Kata Containers (kata-clh/kata-fc/kata-qemu), gVisor (runsc).
NixOS, Nix packages, MicroVM.nix
Orchestration platforms: Kubernetes (CRI), Nomad; familiarity with production sandbox stacks (AWS Lambda, Modal, Fly.io, E2B, Northflank).
